DC Movie Universe Welcomes New Boss Out with the old, and in with the new…

Geoff Johns has officially welcomes IT producer, Walter Hamada, who has been appointed by Warner Bros. to oversee all DC Comics movies – not just the DCEU.

In the 2000s and early 2010s, Warner Bros. revelled in the success of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, as well as the other DC adaptations, however with their newly-formed DC Extended Universe (which officially launched with Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice a mere two years ago) has been…well, less than successful.

With a string of critical failures, alongside the poor performance of Snyder’s Justice League at the box office, the studio has now begun restructuring their DC Films division. Chief creative officer Geoff Johns has been overseeing production on all DCEU movies with production chief Jon Berg since 2016 – but following the release of Justice League, Berg left his position. And now, Warner Bros. is promoting New Line Cinema’s Hamada to replace Berg as the point man on all of the studios comicbook movies, not just those developed under the DC Films banner.

Geoff Johns took to Twitter yesterday to confirm the hire of Hamada, and welcomed him to the DC Films team:

Many fans (especially those who enjoyed the Rebirth and Doomsday Clock series’) had hoped that Warner Bros. would allow Johns to have free reign over the DCEU, however, he is not a film producer, and he hasn’t had the experience working on an expanding universe (and spinoff movies) that Hamada has. Responsible for producing films such as IT and The Conjuring, Hamada has had an enormous amount of success at New Line, and Warner Bros. wants him to apply these skills to their DC features.

Interestingly, Hamada has already worked alongside some of the DCEU upcoming directors. According to Johns, he is involved with David F. Sandberg’s Shazam! movie, having worked with Sandberg previously on the production of Annabelle: Creation, and he has also worked alongside James Wan, the director of the upcoming Aquaman standalone, in the development of The Conjuring franchise. With this in mind, it should be fairly easy for Hamada to make the transition to heading DC Films.

Hopefully, Hamada to can help to turn the DCEU around.
