Since they announced that there was going to be a live-action version of 1998’s hit animation, Mulan, Disney have been searching for their leading lady. And, now, they have finally found her.
Fans have been concerned about Hollywood whitewashing for a while now, and the casting announcements for the upcoming live-action Aladdin film, only seemed to fuel the fire. However, fans need no longer worry about their favourite Chinese warrior princess’ cultural identity being lost, because as far as casting is concerned, Disney has found the perfect actress to portray Fa Mulan.
Chinese actress Liu Yifei will be playing the titular role, star of The Forbidden Kingdom, IP Man 3, and Outcast, and as the bulk of her work to date has been in Chinese cinema, this will mark her first major English-language leading role.
And she’s perfect. Just look:
She looks just like Mulan:
Mulan is set to be helmed by The Zookeeper’s Wife director Niki Caro, with War for the Planet of the Apes writers Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa penning the screenplay. They are reportedly using the animated film as inspiration, but digging further into the core story.
There is no release date for Mulan as yet, however, if they are currently at the casting stage, the movie will most likely move into production during the first half of 2018, ready for a 2019 release.
And with this casting choice, we can’t wait to hear more!
