Explore the Making of ‘The Last Jedi’ in New Documentary See how Rian Johnson made Episode VIII

The first 12 minutes of documentary The Director and the Jedi, have debuted online. It chronicles the Rian Johnson’s journey in making Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Lucasfilm have been working hard to hype up fans for the DVD release of the latest Star Wars instalment by teasing the huge amount of special features that will appear on the Blu-Ray version. Along with 14 deleted scenes, the most anticipated feature is the feature-length documentary, The Director and the Jedi, which allows fans an intimate look at the production of the film.

The documentary was recently screened at SXSW 2018, where it earned rave reviews – and while we await the full release of the feature, a preview is now available to watch.

An IMDb exclusive, the video shows the first part of the documentary, starting with the fan reactions to Johnson’s hiring. It also sees stars Daisy Ridley and Mark Hamill reading through the script with Johnson, Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy, and producer Ram Bergman, as well as the director joking about the Russian Twitter accounts that demanded General Hux stay alive.

Viewers will also get a sense of what a huge undertaking a Star Wars production really is, as it is revealed that 120 sets were made for the 100-day shoot, with everything having to be perfectly timed in order for the film to finish on schedule. As Ram Bergman says in the clip, even if one person got sick, it threatened to derail the entire operation.

The documentary isn’t likely to change the opinions of Johnson’s polarising creative choices in The Last Jedi, however it will hopefully provide more of an insight into the process Johnson went through. The director notes that he was approaching the film as a fan, looking to be entertained in ways he didn’t expect, which he definitely delivered on. This feature will definitely prove that Rian Johnson’s script wasn’t something dictated to him by Lucasfilm, as a safe response to the criticisms of The Force Awakens – Johnson wanted to make the Star Wars he would want to see, and Lucasfilm were on board with that.

What will certainly be interesting to see, is how the documentary features the death of Carrie Fisher – if indeed it does. Nevertheless, it should be an extremely interesting watch for Star Wars and cinema fans alike – and we can’t wait to see it.
