David Brevik, the creator of the Diablo series, has unveiled his new game It Lurks Below which blends 2D dungeon-crawling and sandbox elements. The game is clearly informed by Brevik’s previous projects Diablo and Marvel Heroes, which all contain action – RPG and loot mechanics. The difference this time around though is that Brevik is the single developer working (as part of his self-founded Greybeard Studio) on It Lurks Below, making it a much smaller affair.
In It Lurks Below, players can dig and craft while platforming around dungeons. Speaking to Polygon, Brevik notes that the game is inspired by games like Minecraft and Terraria but looks to add something deeper:
“I wanted more of a point to a lot of those games,” Brevik said. “I wanted to make an RPG, with classes and levelling up, random items, where you get more and more powerful as you go down into the core of the world and fight baddies.”
It Lurks below is “Random built on random” gameplay which tasks players with navigating procedural generated environments and monsters. It Lurks Below will include three styles of play: an easier “creative” mode, normal and hardcore, essentially a permadeath mode. The game features an array of weapons and ‘wands’ with different stats and attributes which must be experimented with to overcome each monster’s unique tricks and strengths- Diablo style.
Brevik plans to support the game after it is released stating:
“I am going to be adding stuff to [It Lurks Below], listening to the community, getting feedback and making sure the game is the best it can be,” he said. “That is something I definitely worked hard on with Marvel Heroes, getting that feedback from the community.”
It Lurks Below is due for release later this year but there is a closed beta, limited to 200 people running this weekend. Brevik will be streaming the game on his Twitch channel. He’ll start streaming It Lurks Below on Friday, Feb. 2, at 9 p.m. PT.
