Leonardo DiCaprio’s Da Vinci Biopic Lands ‘Skyfall’ Writer A tale of two Leos.

Writer of the most recent James Bond films, John Logan, has been hired to adapt the biography of artist Leonardo Da Vinci, for the biopic starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Logan wrote Skyfall and produced the screenplay for Spectre, as well as being the creator and writer of gothic series, Penny Dreadful, and his appointment proves that work on the biopic is steadily progressing.

DiCaprio is certainly no stranger to inhabiting real-life historical figures, as they are often the roles which bring him the most success, from Hugh Glass in The Revenant, to J. Edgar Hoover in Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar. However, the desire to play Da Vinci has been with the actor for a long time, and it relates directly to his family. He earned his name whilst still in the womb, where he allegedly kicked for the first time whilst his mother gazed at a Da Vinci painting in Italy.

The chance to play the artist and inventor came around during a studio bidding war last year, where Paramount got the rights to the Walter Isaacson-penned biography. August then brought with it the announcement that DiCaprio would produce and star in a film based on the biography.

Deadline has now reported that Logan has signed on to adapt Isaacson’s book into a screenplay, marking the second time that the writer and actor have worked together. Logan also wrote The Aviator, another of DiCaprio’s historical dramas, in which he portrayed Howard Hughes. The screenwriter has also worked on a number of other historical films, such as Gladiator and The Last Samurai.

The biopgraphy concentrates, for the most part, on the origins of the Italian inventor’s work, and his lifestyle – along with the production of some of the world’s most famous paintings, he pioneered the study of human biology, as well as scientific studies, theatrical works and plans for more futuristic weaponry. Some of this has been touched upon already – albeit in a wildly fictional manner – in the Starz series Da Vinci’s Demons, however they now have the chance to realise a more realistic drama.
