Paul Bettany Says ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ is a “Gangster Movie” But where is the trailer?!

According to co-star Paul Bettany, the young Han Solo film, Solo: A Star Wars Story, will be both a caper and a gangster film.

This year has been firmly focused on the release of The Last Jedi – and let’s be honest, it’s unlikely that we’ll be speaking about anything else until the new year – we’re now only five months away from the release of the next Star Wars instalment.

As it stands, most of the new information around Solo has come from eagle-eyed Star Wars fans who have noticed an image of Alden Ehrenreich on some movie theatre merchandise, as well as a glimpse of a teaser poster alongside one for The Last Jedi.

There has also been considerable chatter around Michael K. Williams’ exit from the film, and Bettany joining the cast, with many fans wondering whether the two roles were the same – and while that’s unclear still, Bettany’s involvement has led to some of the only teasers about the film outside of director Ron Howard’s on-set hints.

In the latest issue of Total Film, Bettany mentions a little about Solo. While he obvious couldn’t discuss specifics, he did confirm what the genre of spinoff would be, along with the kind of tone we can expect:

“It’s Han Solo’s story, and of course his story would be a caper. On one level it’s a gangster movie. That’s really interesting, because it’s within the canon but really different. It’s f**king Han Solo!”

We know that the film’s focus is on the young Han Solo, so it makes sense that the smuggler and his comrades would be caught up in danger, as small fish in a much larger pond, up against far bigger enemies. As well as this, Han being the rogue he is, his character lends itself well to the genre of crime capers.

As for Bettany’s role in the story, he could only speak vaguely on it, going on to discuss what it was like to suddenly find himself in the Star Wars universe:

“Suddenly, I’m an intergalactic gangster and I’m walking down some stairs and an R2 unit goes by with some champagne, and I’m like… [drops jaw] I had that feeling that I hadn’t had since I was first on a film set – I was a little boy doing the best job in the world.”

Solo: A Star Wars Story should have no problem winning over audiences, if the track record of the new Star Wars movies is anything to go by, however, the general lack of marketing for the film, given we’re mere months from the release could ultimately be the spinoff’s undoing.

Solo: A Star Wars Story is set for release on May 25th, 2018.
