Showrunner of The CW’s Riverdale, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa may have confirmed a Black Hood fan theory on Twitter.
In the midseason finale of Season 2, “Silent Night, Deadly Night”, the terror of Riverdale was revealed (very disappointingly) to be Archie’s school janitor, Joe Svenson. In the episodes prior, Svenson’s haunting past was revealed, connecting him to the Black Hood killings, as it we were shown that the janitor was the lone survivor of the Riverdale Reaper’s massacre. After misidentifying the killer as a travelling preacher, who was then brutally murdered by the townsfolk, Svenson took it upon himself to punish the town, making them pay for their sins with blood.
Many fans (including this one) didn’t think that this reveal was the proper climax to the action that unfolded before the midseason finale, and therefore a lot of Riverdale fans believe the Black Hood is still out there. And it seems that we may well be right, as showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has hinted that we haven’t seen the last of the Hood.
From this we know that Betty’s long, lost brother Chic Cooper (Hart Denton), who will be introduced on the show’s return, isn’t lurking around the Cooper household. So who is? We know that Betty and the Black Hood shared a connection throughout the first half of Season 2, and so far we know that the second half will focus heavily on the Coopers being “front and centre” for Betty, as well as us seeing the Riverdale teens return to a normal life, not hunting for killers.
Which, let’s face it, would be the perfect time for the Hood to return. However, many believe that it may be Betty who adopts the moniker, as the last shot of the “Silent Night, Deadly Night” saw her burn everything related to the Black Hood – except the hood itself. So it remains to be seen whether a Black Hood, new or old, makes a return to the suburb.
Riverdale returns on January 17th.
