Since Riverdale began, fans have been questioning whether Archie Comics’ staple character Sabrina, the Teenage Witch would be showing up in the classic comic series’ dark adaptation. Well, wonder no more as it’s now been confirmed that Sabrina won’t just be showing up on our screens – she’ll be doing so in her own show.
According to a press release from Warner Bros., they will be developing The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, with the CW, based on the Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa comic series of the same name. In keeping with the more horror-based stories coming from Archie Comics in recent years, this iteration of Sabrina is not for the faint-hearted, as it supposes a reality where Sabrina is the Satan-promised offspring of a human woman and a warlock, and is growing up in a coven whilst still trying to live a normal life.
Aguirre-Sacasa will be writer and executive producer on the series, with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Jon Goldwater as fellow executive producers, and Lee Toland Krieger as director and executive producer.
There has only been a script order for a one-hour drama series that will be a ‘dark drama’ combining elements of witchcraft, the occult, and other more general horror themes, as Sabrina tries to cope with her dual identity as a witch and a mortal, and sees her “standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.”
And while it still seems fairly unlikely that Sabrina will be showing up in Riverdale, clearly the powers that be have heard the fans’ wishes.
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is expected in late 2018.
